From Torfhaus to Königshütte

Along Goethe's path to Brocken

At this stage the most characteristic of the Oberharz landscapes can be seen. From Torfhaus the route starts by leading you through the National Park and then later on through the Hochharz park pine woods.

Above 900 m the vegetation changes and the severe climate of Brocken is ideal for marshes. As we reach the top of the Brocken along the Goethe's marsh footbridges you can see on clear days a picturesque view of the Harz Mountains.

Torfhaus - St. Andreasberg - Königshütte

Southern route around Brocken

If you want to enjoy old mines, blooming meadows and virgin stream valleys, you should take this route. Although it is much longer than the route through Brocken it is less steep.

From Torfhaus the path travels through a thin wood interwoven with marshes. As you follow Marchenweg in order to reach Oderteich you will find an unusual dam made of huge granite blocks. Further on Hexenstieg follows through Jordanhohe towards an area of former pastures where you can admire unique vegetation.

After St. Andreasberg the trail travels along virgin Odertal valley and at Königshutte both routes meet again.
