From the Sayn Palace to Rengsdorf
The Rheinsteig trail continues the detour through the Westerwald. Starting at Sayn Palace, the way leads quickly uphill again and passes Neuwied's Zoo at Heimbach-Weis.
Up to the Westerwald forest
As you walk along the edge of the forest, there are good distant views overlooking the lowland plain of the Neuwied basin. The Rheinsteig trail continues on paths through the forest and passes remains of the Roman Limes as well as another reconstructed watchtower at the slope of the Wingertsberg hill.

There is more woodland on the final passage uphill to the climatic health resort of Rengsdorf, where the Rheinsteig trail has reached its maximum distance to the Rhine River.
