From Kaub to St. Goarshausen
This rather long and exhausting stage is doubtlessly one of the highlights of the entire long-distance trail. The trail follows the Rhine along the heights, always staying in close distance to the river, and there is an abundance of dramatic views. One of them is the famous view at the Loreley rock near St.Goarshausen, and there is certainly no other place which is associated closer with Rhine romanticism.
Passing the Loreley
An initial and rather long climb leads to the plateau above the Rhine and to Dörscheid. Repeatedly there are terrific views of Oberwesel and of Schönburg castle from the rocks high above the river. With a constant change of uphill and downhill stretches the trail passes several smaller valleys coming in from the side. Some less frequented spots, e.g. Felsenkanzel and Spitznack, already allow brilliant views of the Rhine winding in its narrow riverbed, before the Rheinsteig reaches the world famous Loreley rock.
Not far away, a very informative and interactive visitor's centre invites you to learn more about the World Cultural Heritage of the Upper Central Rhine Valley. After passing Burg Katz castle above St. Goarshausen, a final climb to the Patersberg hill is worth the effort, because it adds one last highlight to the many others of this great stage taking you to another "Three Castles View.
