From Johannisberg to Rüdesheim
It takes about half an hour to return from Schloss Johannisberg to the actual Rheinsteig trail. The course of the stage is predominantly through woodland and along vineyard paths. Besides the Rheingau wines, some well-known cloisters are on today's programme. An initial ascent through the forest is followed by a steep passage downhill to the Elsterbach valley.
Passing the abbey of St. Hildegardis
This is the location of the Kloster Marienthal monastery, a popular place of pilgrimage. It is only a short way to the next cloister, Kloster Nothgottes, located in the Blaubach valley. The Rheinsteig trail leads you on through the vineyards of the Rheingau until you eventually come to the famous abbey of St. Hildegard which was founded by the legendary Hildegard of Bingen.
View on the Rheingau
The last part of the stage continues through vineyards along the slopes of the Rhine Valley before the day of walking ends at the massive Niederwald monument near Rüdesheim. Rüdesheim is one of the Rhine Valley's major places of tourism and invites you to have a rest, because the following stage is pretty long and full of highlights. It will take you to the World Cultural Heritage site of the Upper Central Rhine Valley.
