From Blankenstein to Steinbach

This first stage of The Rennsteig is varied passing through both woodland and open country where there is oportunity to take-in some particularly scenic views. The route ascends steeply initally but soon levels to become a relatively gentle climb. During this stage, the route crosses the border with the fomer German Democratic Republic several times. Because this area was relatively inaccesible until after 1990, it has become a retreat for endangered animals and plants.
