From Rheine to Hörstel

The Hermanns' Walk starts in in the lowlands of the Münsterland and slowly approaches the ridge of the Teutoburg Forest. Rheine is located on the river Ems and during this first stage you walk mainly through the nice pastureland of the river and through the open countryside and the fields of the plain.

At Hörstel you pass the intersection of two of Germany's major waterways, the Dortmund-Ems Canal and the Mittelland Canal, and the first small hills.
