Your walking path: Home  > Germany  > Franconia  > Weißenburg / Wettelsheim

From Weißenburg to Wettelsheim

The Franconia Way now passes the area of the Altmühl Valley nature reserve which is a most fascinating and protected landscape. A short time after the start at Weißenburg the track passes the fortified Wülzburg castle. A nice stretch of the way now takes you through the densely forested region of the Weißenburger Wald.

After a longer passage which is comparably unspectacular the Franconia Way passes the remains of an early medieval canal which dates from Carolingian time - the Karlsgraben or Fossa Carolina. At Graben there is an exhibition on this fascinating and forward-looking building project which eventually failed because of the limited technology of the time. The path reaches the Altmühl river and shortly ends the leg at Wettelsheim.
