From Scheßlitz to Heiligenstadt
This leg of the Franconia Way passes through hilly scenery with a constant change of passages through woodlands and through the open country. Shortly after the start at Scheßlitz the path passes two hilltops. The first one is the location of scenic Giechburg castle which partly lies in ruins and at the second hill there is a nice chapel called Gügelkapelle.
Over the top there are splendid views of the Franconian countryside. A steep climb takes you back to the Franconian Alb's plateau again where the way passes the valley of the small river Leinleiter on an extremely scenic route.
The upper part of this valley is usually dry and nearer the old Heroldsmühle water mill you will find the river's regular spring. The way leaves the valley for a last climb to Eichenberg hill before it returns to the small river. You will arrive at Heiligenstadt which is scenically located on the river Leinleiter's banks.
